Cuckoo clock pulls voicemail off the Internet and plays it back The CuckooIP is a student-built, Internet-connected cuckoo clock that receives alarms by phone (call and record a message and set a time for it to play) and then replays them at set times: the cuckoo comes out of his hole and the recorded message plays back.

Messages can be set for any time in the future; reminders, greetings, insults or revelations.

Identifying color is easy with the new Texas Advanced Optical Systems (www.taosinc.com) TCS230 frequency to color sensor. This is a high-sensitivity low-noise light-to-voltage optical converter that incorporates on board blue, green, and red optical filters. The sensor combines a photodiode and an amplifier on a single monolithic CMOS integrated circuit with a color filter over the photodiode. What’s really neat about this sensor is that it provides standard RGB color values with 90% accuracy!

NRK først ute i verden med mobilt interaktivt tv

Alltid kjekt å lese norske nyheter i utenlandsk media. Selv om det dessverre er Svisj.

Norwegian broadcaster NRK and Swedish wireless equipment maker LM Ericsson announced what they say is the world’s first test of interactive mobile television.

During the six-week test, users can download a program for watching and interacting with the Norwegian youth music program Svisj on their mobile phones.

Users can vote for the next music video by pressing a mobile phone key, and chat in writing with each other or the program leaders while watching the show.

In April, the NRK claimed another world first by broadcasting live reports from a 56-mile ski race that were transmitted with a video-equipped mobile phone.

SAM Aka SAMACLAWSSAM is the three time, undefeated champ of the “World’s Ugliest Dog” contest (2003, 2004, 2005).

News traveled very quickly, and Susie received emails from around the world expressing condolences, and many expressing how SAM had affected their lives. There has truly been an outpouring of love. SAM touched people in very different ways, from eliciting almost uncontrollabe laughter to being a little frightened, but mostly it was SAM’s and Susie’s relationship that enormored them to so many. There can be love, affection and respect for even the seemingly unattractive souls of this world. There have been emails telling Susie that more and more animals that had been considered unadoptable in the past are now being taken in and loved by new parents. Although SAM will be missed by millions, he surely did his good deed while on this earth! People have also indicated that they really want SAM’s website and blog site to continue. As long as there are more pictures, stories, and inspiration to pass on, Susie will try and continue. Susie passes on her deepest thanks for all of the support she has received from so many thousands of you. Sam - “World’s Ugliest Dog” Rest In Peace

Sam is a purebred, yes that’s right, a purebred Chinese Crested Hairless. He’s almost 15 years old and was taken in as a rescue over five years ago by Susie Lockheed. He was considered “un-adoptable” by local shelters. Susie took him in on a 48-hour trial period. During that time he lived in a cage because he acted like “Cujo” the rabid dog. Susie had to shove food and water into the cage and run. The 48-hour trial became several days, and then Sam just walked out of the cage and became one of the pack (other hairless dogs who found harbor in Susie’s domain).

Albert Swank Jr., a 55-year-old civil engineer in Anchorage, Alaska, is a man with a mission. He wants to install a nuclear particle accelerator in his home.

But when neighbors learned of plans to place the 20-ton device inside the house where Swank operates his engineering firm, their response was swift: Not in my backyard.

“Cyclotrons are not nuclear reactors,” explains Roger Dixon of the FermiNational Accelerator laboratory or Fermilab in Illinois, funded by the U.S.Department of Energy. “Probably the worst thing that could happen with small cyclotrons is that the operator might electrocute themselves.”

The Anchorage Assembly plan to hold an emergency publichearing on Dec. 20 to determine whether he will be permitted toinstall the device at his lifelong residence.

The device, called the Mosquito (“It’s small and annoying,” Mr. Stapleton said), emits a high-frequency pulsing sound that, he says, can be heard by most people younger than 20 and almost no one older than 30. The sound is designed to so irritate young people that after several minutes, they cannot stand it and go away.

Field tests at a grocery store in Barry, South Wales, and a shop in Stapleton’s home town of Merthyr Tydfil have proved successful, with rowdy yobs driven from the premises.

Bruker hjerneskanning til å forutse oppførsel

http://mednews.wustl.edu/news/page/normal/6248.html

Neurologer ved Washington University bruker hjerneskanning til å forutse om en person vil klare et videospill eller ikke.

Eleven seconds before volunteers played the game — discriminating the direction of a field of moving dots — scientists showed them a hint: an arrow pointing to where the moving dots were likely to appear. The dots were visible only for one-fifth of a second and therefore were easy to miss if a subject was not paying attention to the right area. After the hint and prior to the appearance of the moving dots, researchers scanned the volunteers with functional brain imaging, which reveals increases in blood flow to different brain areas indicative of increased activity in those regions. Based on brain activity patterns that reflected whether the subjects used the hint or not, scientists found they could frequently predict whether a volunteer’s response would be right or wrong before the volunteers even had a chance to try to see the dots.

These specialists estimate that 6 percent to 10 percent of the approximately 189 million Internet users in this country [USA] have a dependency that can be as destructive as alcoholism and drug addiction, and they are rushing to treat it. Yet some in the field remain skeptical that heavy use of the Internet qualifies as a legitimate addiction, and one academic expert called it a fad illness.
